The Time Of The Crone

The Time Of The Crone Image
The symbol of the Dark Goddess is the New Moon as She is called today. But it was different long ago...before patriarchy. The early societies revered the Moon as the Goddess, and the dark phase was personified at a Dark Goddess...the Dark Moon...wise, mysterious, and compassionate.

Her story began thousands of years ago...before that of recorded history...in a time when she was loved and honored and worshipped. She was warrior, protector, wise woman, and healer, and many sought out her wisdom. She rules over the magickal arts, secret knowledge, and the oracles. She is both fate and death. The Dark Mother is the ultimate teacher of the deepest of spiritual mysteries. She represents old age, winter, the waning moon, and destruction. Her symbol is the raven or the crow. She is the patroness of witches and priestesses and rules the night, magick, and prophesy. She is the Crone, the Great Queen.

Eventually, though, the world began to change. As matriarchal societies, which had worshipped the Goddesses of the earth and moon gave way to a patriarchal society, her original role as a "renewer" was forgotten, and she came to be feared as a destroyer through the patriarchal myths which portrayed her as the Temptress, the Terrible Mother, and the death bearing Crone. No longer was she loving and wise. The solar Gods reigned supreme, and she was delegated to a position of secondary importance. This is because man has feared the Crone; they do not understand her...and because they feared the dark, it was no wonder that they feared the Dark Goddess. So, instead of the Moon being called the Dark Moon, it instead became the New Moon.

But, despite the best efforts of a patriarchal society, She has survived...she has survived all things, and it is through Her that we, too, will survive all things. But, we must first seek to learn Her teachings. Women are daughters of the Goddess, and we all carry Her gifts. We feel like Her because we are Her. We know Her no matter what phase She may be in. She is Mother and Crone to us all. We need to seek the Crone each month if we are to release those things that we have hidden in the dark recesses of our minds and are afraid to face...our shadow self.

Do not fear the Dark Goddess. Embrace her...and he magick. Do not fear the dark for there is nothing in the dark that is not there in the light. Sing! Dance! Perform magickal rites in Her honor. She is the Crone....wise woman, understanding, the comforter. It is through her that we can learn.

I've always kept a journal. I may not always write in it, but it is always there is I need it. Whenever I am going through something, I like to write out my thoughts, my feelings. Writing is healing. As a counselor, I have many clients who have had horrendous childhoods or through their addictions have hurt their parents. In Twelve Step Programs, Step 9 says, "Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure self or others." Hard to make amends if the person has passed away. So, my clients write letters to the deceased or keep journals in order to help them heal. Journals will be a good way of responding the questions that will be a part of this blog if you care to participate. Questions come from Demetra George's "Mysteries of the Dark Moon".

Am I afraid of the dark? How do I feel when the power goes off and my house is plunged into darkness? Do I panic? Do I feel safe? How do I feel about growing old. Am I afraid of old age? Do I tell others the truth about how old I am? How do I feel when I see an old person?
