This takes some practice, but an ideal way to get started is to make sure you have a quiet space where you will not be disturbed. Unplug the telephone, switch off the television, close the window if there is a lot of noise outside, make sure the place doesn't smell of food or unpleasant and make sure you are comfortable (and that includes not being hungry or needing the lavatory!).
Clearing your mind isn't always easy, but a simple technique is to imagine that your mind is a cinema screen and your thoughts are projected onto it - you then have to dispose of the mental clutter, until your cinema screen is clear, white and ready to project what you want on to it. Your mind must be at peace so that you can focus on what you're trying to accomplish.
When you first start to meditate, it may be challenging to stop all the thoughts of daily life from getting in the way. A really good way of dealing with all the impinging thoughts is to acknowledge them, put them on to a little, fluffy cloud and float them into the distance - so far that they disappear. An alternative is to have a litter-bin wherever your meditation place is - it works well if you're in a park - and every time a thought intrudes, pick it up, screw it up and put it in the bin. It works.
It takes patience and regular practice, but even if you try clearing and quieting your mind before you go to sleep each night, you'll find that you get good at it pretty quickly (and probably sleep better too).
During meditation the brain enters an altered state of consciousness - known as 'alpha' - a state also entered during deep relaxation and dreaming. In the alpha state the brain waves register at between seven and fourteen cycles. This is close to the background energy cycles of the Earth itself. Through practise, work in the alpha state can open one up to a whole new, much broader, sense of reality then hitherto discovered. Not only can one benefit enormously from temporarily by-passing the glamours of the ego to gain contact and communication with ones higher self, but one is also better able to develop skills such as telepathy, clairvoyance and pre-cognition. It is in the alpha state that we are able to enter and explore the other planes of reality that include the astral and spiritual planes creating a situation where we are much more open and receptive to the energies that exist all around us, rather just those on the more commonly recognised physical plane.
Alpha is a state where we can expand into the vibrationary rates of the other planes of existence. It is whilst working between these planes where much of the occult work is undertaken - which will be discussed more fully later in this book. Meditation is basically the means by which we gain access to the quantum reality; a greater sense of the breadth of reality than we are commonly aware of as a young adolescent, or even as an adult if we haven't looked explored beyond the materialistic physical plane.
Visualisation work during meditation is a vital element in magic whether it be used, as many do, for healing purposes or other intentions. Another technique for those who may struggle with meditations, or even for the more advanced who want to work on specific issues or courses of action, is a guided meditation. This should only ever be carried out with somebody you trust and who knows what they are doing as it can involve going much deeper than you would usually delve on your own, although one can have some success using pre-recorded tapes (preferably those you have prepared yourself). You can learn to use such techniques to reach the higher self where past life memories reside. You will discover that it is here that we can discover many of the blockages and fears that effect our current incarnation.
